Incorporated in 1787, Southbury is located in western New Haven County. Southbury is known for its rural charm, historic districts and desirable suburban neighborhoods. Bordering Interstate 84, Southbury is within 80 miles of New York City and 40 miles of Hartford making it an ideal commuter community. IBM and Southbury Training School are the town’s major employers.
Southbury is home to six public parks and sits on the shores of Lake Zoar, a popular swimming and boating destination. The Shepaug Dam, located on the Housatonic River, is a popular nesting and feeding ground for wintering bald eagles and hawks and features an eagle observatory area.
Part of the Pomperaug Regional School District 15-school system, the Southbury school system is comprised of two elementary schools: Gainfield Elementary and Pomperaug Elementary, Rochambeau Middle School (a national blue ribbon school) and Pomperaug High School.
