The first thing that people often say about Kissimmee is, "How did it get its name?" "Kissimmee" is thought to originate in a tribal word, perhaps a name for a settlement. What we do know is that today's spelling comes from a 1752 Spanish map that labeled the community as "Cacema", which eventually evolved into its present spelling.

Kissimmee has been a shipyard, railway hub, citrus and cattle ranch town. In 1971, when Walt Disney World Resort opened its doors, Kissimmee real estate became popular with people who worked at the resort and in the Orlando area to live. From a population of 4,310 in 1950, Kissimmee has grown to over 60,000.

Growth in population has resulted in construction of residential real estate in Kissimmee. Homes here are diverse, from condos to ranch houses dating back to the cattle ranching heydays, to estates on the waters of Lake Toho. Home prices have decreased in 2009, making Kissimmee homes a great value for your dollar. The close proximity of a large number of attractions makes these homes especially appealing.

Kissimmee has been honoured by winning the 2008 All-America City Competition. This award is the oldest community recognition in the country, and the most prestigious. This award is given to communities where people work together to effectively resolve local issues and make their community a better place.

Lake Toho is known for its bass fishing and boating opportunities, as is the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes. There are still working cattle ranches in the area that are open to touring. There are many beaches near enough Kissimmee homes to allow for day trips to the ocean.
