Redding's history goes back several centuries, when the Wintu people settled the area in approximately the year 1000. The Mexican government granted the land to a pioneer named Pierson Reading in 1844, and Southern Pacific Railroad later built a rail line going through the area. Oddly enough, Redding was not named after the pioneer Pierson Reading, but a railroad man and politician named Benjamin Redding. The City of Redding was formally incorporated in 1887.
