The settlement that would become Cottonwood was established along a major stagecoach route in 1849, and the town received its own post office in 1852. Cottonwood remained quiet for most of its history; however, part of the film “Almost Heroes,” starring Matthew Perry and Chris Farley, was filmed there in 1997.

Cottonwood is the southernmost community in Shasta County, which is located in North Central California. This small rural community straddles Interstate 5, which provides quick passage north to Redding and Oregon, and south to Red Bluff and Sacramento. Redding is just 15 miles north and Red Bluff is just 15 miles south. Shasta Lake, which offers excellent recreation opportunities for boating enthusiasts, is roughly 40 minutes to the north.
