History

The area that would become Shasta County was long inhabited by the Shasta people. Shasta County was one of California's original counties, meaning it was created when California became a state in 1850. Anderson's history goes back to 1872, when a railroad line was built in the area. The community was named after Elias Anderson, who owned much of the land that the town would be built on. Anderson was formally incorporated in 1956.

Anderson is located in the southern part of Shasta County, which is itself located in North Central California. Redding, the largest city in the region, is just 10 miles north on Interstate 5. Shasta Lake is another 10 miles north, and Mount Shasta looms even further north. Sacramento is a about a two-hour drive to the south, and Lassen Volcanic National Park is a little over an hour to the east.
