The air was crisp with scent of avocado trees covered with the morning dew. The dew would be gone soon and the sun would rise, and then set triggering a breeze that cooled the estate each evening. An Escondido legend stood looking over his domain. It was 1965 and after nearly a decade of negotiations, sales, transfers and agreements he and his family had acquired this undeniably breathe taking plot of land. He inhaled a small amount of that crisp air and looked over his property envisioning what would come over the next decades. The flamboyant, cantankerous and savvy businessman was known for his store on Broadway & Washington. In fact Rube was known so well that in 2004, 13 years after his passing, Theatrx produced âRubeâ a homage to the Escondido legend. The stories of his influence and the good times shared at the home can still be heard today. From the pool to the avocado shared with friends. Rube determined this to be his final location to live out his life and to enjoy Escondido. This was the place where he would enjoy all of the local treasures he had been a part of creating. Rube had donated the property to the local Childrenâs Hospital upon his passing.The nearly $300 thousand dollars in donations at its sale gave Rube the blessing of having a wing at the hospital named after him. The property then enjoyed the graces of more socialites and lastly a Ukrainian ballerina. During the Great Recession predatory loans proved to powerful for the Ballerina. Like many at the time, she was unable to recover from them. She fell into foreclosure and the property was lost. The estate fell into disrepair and was inhabited by unsavory characters that demanded over 100 police responses to home. The storied residence began to fall, and lose its luster. After arduous negotiations property was acquired by local investors. It was overhauled and restored to bring back the prominence. Hardwood floors where refinished not removed. Trim and sconces were refinished or repaired in like kind keeping with feel of the home. The home was restored to its previous wonder all was restored, except the avocado orchard. You see, the ballerina did not have much of a liking for guacamole and fish tacos. She preferred the views of Escondido to be expansive, so she cleared the orchard in its entirety. Many of the locals were sad to see it go over a decade ago but now that same orchard offers an opportunity to a few lucky individuals. You see when Rube did all that work over the better part of a decade while he negotiated his purchase to the estate, he also subdivided that orchard.
