Originally named Point of Rocks, Helendale has a long and rich history. Several early trails convened at this point of the Mojave Desert, including the Mojave Trail, Santa Fe Trail and the Spanish Trail. When the Santa Fe Railroad arrived in the 1880s, Point of Rocks became a watering station for the steam engines. In 1897, the name was changed to Helen in honor of railroad executive Arthur G. Wells’s daughter Helen.
In 1918, the name was changed to Helendale. Route 66 officially opened the Helendale area to settlement in 1926. In the early 1970s, the resort community of Silver Lakes was built around two man-made lakes, North Lake, and South Lake. Today, while the Post Office uses the name Helendale, the area is referred to as Silver Lakes by the US Census. The community of Helendale/Silver Lakes is now home to over 5,000 residents.
The Helendale/Silver Lakes area is nestled between Barstow and Victorville on historic Route 66 in San Bernardino County’s picturesque Victor Valley. It is located 100 miles northeast of Los Angles and 180 miles southwest of Las Vegas and sits at just over 2,400 ft above sea level.
