8. History and development: With more than 100 years of history, Broomfield is an exceptionally prized home to its residents who have worked hard to maintain the hometown atmosphere. Born in the latter quarter of the nineteenth century on the heals of the Colorado gold rush, Broomfield began as an agrarian community. By the turn of the century, Broomfield was a little town surrounded by agriculture in the area that is now 120th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. In the 1950s during a growth boom, Broomfield developed as a master-planned dream community. The city and county’s current population is 55,900 and spans nearly 33.6 square miles. It is still governed by a Master Plan that projects its population at build-out to be 65,000 and 40% open space. The only Colorado city to have once spread across four counties, residents sought relief in a constitutional amendment to establish itself as Colorado’s 64th county.
