St. Augustine, Florida
When considering where to live, most people evaluate the character of their new potential home. Most folks want to live in a community they can be proud of - one with an impressive history, elegant architecture, and plenty of fun activities. St. Augustine - the oldest continuously occupied community in the United States - has all of the above and much more. If you’re looking for a great city in which to buy a rental property, St. Augustine should be near the top of your list.
St. Augustine’s history goes all the way back to 1565, when Spanish Admiral Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles founded the settlement. St. Augustine served as the capital of Spanish Florida for two centuries before the British took control in the late 1700s. The Spanish reclaimed St. Augustine, then ceded the land to the United States in 1821. The city was briefly the capital of Florida Territory before Tallahassee assumed that role in 1824.
St. Augustine is in St. Johns County, which is along the northern part of Florida’s east coast. The city was built on the mouths of the Matanzas and Tolomato Rivers, making it an excellent port. Jacksonville is about 45 minutes to the northwest, and Daytona Beach is an hour drive to the south. The enormous St. Johns River is due west of St. Augustine, and is very popular among boating enthusiasts.
