More About Oviedo
Oviedo is set in a place of rich history. There is little evidence of the original inhabitants of the area, the Timucuan clan of the Seminole tribe of native people. Oviedo was incorporated in 1929, but its history stretches back much farther, to 1865, when homesteaders first settled the area. Formerly known as Lake Jesup Community, Oviedo was named for the Spanish city of Oviedo by Andrew Aulin, who was appointed the first postmaster. Oviedo became known for its citrus and celery crops grown by a few hundred inhabitants.
Today, Oviedo is a bedroom community of Orlando, boasting nearly 40,000 residents. The celery and citrus are now grown in the backyards of many Oviedo homes. There is a constant reminder of the area's past in its (in)famous flock of wild chickens that have been pecking their way around Oviedo's downtown area since 1875. "Oviedo's Chickens" have become one of the city's unique attractions as well as a reminder of times gone by.
The rural roots of Oviedo are also evident in the layout and property size of its older single family homes. Many of these mid-century homes have been built on ample tracts of land by today's standards. It is not unusual for Oviedo single family homes for sale to boast from .25 to half an acre of land. For people with growing families, this can be a great investment, allowing children the freedom to run and play within the safety of their family's property.
For those who want something smaller and requiring less maintenance, Oviedo condos and townhomes are now available within small developments. These can offer Oviedo home owners the advantages that a condo complex usually offers: maintenance, repair and mutually held amenities, such as swimming pools and clubhouses. Generally, homes in Oviedo condo and townhome developments will be less than the average single family home, making them affordable for a wide range of budgets.
Oviedo lies less than 20 miles away from Orlando, making it ideally situated for the Orlando worker who wants to come home to a quiet community. Within Oviedo, an ambitious downtown revitalization program is geared towards improving the Oviedo downtown core for businesses. The demands of a growing population make this city a good home base for career-minded individuals. Oviedo is a growing community, slated to surpass 40,000 by 2010.
