Located midway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is the historic town of Barstow, California. Surrounded by the majestic landscape of the California desert, Barstow’s pleasant climate and a wealth of amenities make it an ideal location for savoring the splendors of the Mojave Desert.
Founded in 1886, Barstow was named after William Barstow Strong, the owner of the Santa Fe railroad. Once a thriving mining center and railroad town, historic buildings still line Barstow’s Main Street, which is the site of the original Route 66. On First Street, an old iron bridge leads travelers to the railroad depot that was once the location of the historic Harvey House. Although Barstow was founded in 1886, it was not incorporated as a city until 1947.
Centrally located in San Bernardino County at the junction of three major highways----- Interstate 15, Interstate 40 and State Highway 58, Barstow is widely regarded as the transportation hub of the western Mojave Desert. Situated at the entrance to the Mojave National Preserve, Barstow is the perfect home base for adventure. From soaking up the many nearby historical and geological sites like Rainbow Basin, Afton Canyon, the Harvey House Depot and Calico Ghost Town, Barstow places all the excitement of the High Desert at your door.
