With advances in technology, and more specifically access to the Internet, distinguishing the differences in agents has become difficult and confusing. Most new and inexperienced agents will try and dazzle you with flashy presentations as proof of their expertise. Don’t be fooled. It’s critical to look past the glitz and examine an agent’s knowledge and experience — one has real value and the other doesn’t.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING an agent:

Work with someone who has at least 15 years of experience.
Ask yourself if this person will put your needs before theirs.
Is this person good with money? (Remember, you are looking for their guidance in spending your money).
A balanced approach is an important trait to look for — this is how most problems in real estate transactions are resolved.
Choose someone who exhibits patience, understanding and flexibility during your discussions.
A good agent is a better listener than talker.
Knowledge. If an agent can’t explain something, they probably don’t understand it.
Don’t choose an agent just because they’re a family member or a friend. Remember, your best interests aren’t necessarily being served in these situations, and your success in buying or selling your home isn’t something to gamble with.

It goes without saying that choosing the right agent will have a tremendous impact on your financial future. Use your best judgment and don’t settle for less …. the purchase or sale of a home is one of the most important decisions you will make in your life.
