About Old Lyme, CT

Old Lyme residents enjoy a New England culture more naturally matured than most other places. The communities are small enough so that people know each other. Folks strongly appreciate the special qualities of where they live, and are committed to keeping them special. Their attitude is understandable. Old Lyme has a storybook quality all its own. You’ll find beautiful scenes nested demurely almost everywhere you go. Wonderful houses, stone walls, landscaping derived more from their own history than latest trends. Not to forget forests and coastal marshes as well, visual feasts seasoned by the gentle waft of a salt water breeze. There’s something else. A silence you won’t find in most shoreline communities. Contemplative, emanating from the beauty itself. Without begging for attention, it whispers that this is the way it’s supposed to be. Natural. Enduring. Undisturbed. In Old Lyme, it’s been that way for quite a while.

Old Lyme is also an historic center for the arts. It all started in 1899, when Florence Griswold opened her house to struggling artists so they could dedicate themselves to the subtlety of their work. The incredible beauty of the Connecticut shoreline offered all the inspiration they could want, with its changing tides, coastal marshes and sea blue skies. The Griswold House eventually became a Mecca for these pilgrims of American Impressionism. The legacy of these artists still continues in Old Lyme, preserved in such institutions as the Lyme Academy of Fine Art, the Lyme Art Association and the Florence Griswold Museum.
