About East Haven, CT

Originally settled as the East Farms section of New Haven, East Haven is now a large suburb of the city. 28,000 residents populate its 12.6 square miles in south central Connecticut on the east bank of New Haven Harbor. 3 ½ miles of beachfront on Long Island Sound are available for recreational use. The town is well served with easy access to I-95, I-91, Amtrak and Tweed-New Haven Airport. East Haven also is home to the Shore Line Trolley Museum, the oldest operating trolley museum in the United States, with a collection of nearly 100 vintage vehicles.

Rich in history, the origins of East Haven date back to 1638. It later became the site of the first Connecticut ironworks and was known as Iron Works Village. The British invaded the area in 1779 and revisited in 1824. The Roosevelt Turkey Oak, a gift from the President, was planted on the Green in 1908. The town became a city in the 1970’s and is now governed by a Mayor-Council-Board of Finance form of government.
