About Deep River, CT

Deep River was originally settled in 1635 as a village of Saybrook and incorporated in 1644. As the original Saybrook Colony was divided to form several towns in the area, Deep River was defined as the area between Chester and Essex. The name was changed to Deep River in July, 1947. Ten miles up the Connecticut River from Long Island Sound, the town is centrally located in the state's largest vacation area. Today, fully one third of the area is occupied by state forest.
