Way back in 1901, Atlantic Steel opened its foundry just to the northwest of Downtown. Over the years, the plant made everything from barrel hoops to chicken wire. By the early 1980s, the plant was shut down and remained abandoned for many years.
After winning the bid to host the Olympic Games, the site was the top contender for Atlanta's Olympic Stadium. As it turned out, the site was unsuitable due to years of contamination caused by steel production. Finally, in 1998, the site was purchased, cleaned up, and what is now Atlantic Station began to rise atop one of the world's largest parking decks!
Atlantic Station is a city unto itself. There is a central shopping district featuring dozens of shops, restaurants, and entertainments.
