The Uptown Chicago Guide: Trends, History, and Resources to Local Entertainment Location and Area of Uptown ChicagoNorth Boundary: 5200 N Foster South Boundary: 4000 N Irving Park East Boundary: ~200 W Lake Michigan West Boundary: 1600 W Ashland Primary Zip Code: 60640
Bordered by Irving Park Road, Foster Avenue, Clark Avenue, and Lake Michigan; Uptown is a large community that rubs up against Lakeview and Edgewater. It includes beautiful pocket neighborhoods such as Buena Park, Margate Park and Sheridan Park. Current Trends and Facts of Uptown ChicagoRight off the shores of Lake Michigan's Foster Beach and Montrose Harbor, Uptown offers residents easy access to Lake Shore Drive and Lincoln Park, the stretch of parks and beaches along Lake Michigan. There are many opportunities for biking, volleyball, fishing and boating. There is even a sled hill for wintertime enthusiasts. Uptown is home of the Green Mill, once a speakeasy of the infamous Al Capone. The Green Mill is a world-class destination for jazz musicians and enthusiasts. It also boasts Aragon Ballroom and the Riviera Nightclub, two of the more popular mid-sized entertainment venues in Chicago. Historically a very popular tourist destination, the current Uptown Entertainment District is home to various music venues, nightclubs, restaurants and shops. The Uptown Entertainment District is now experiencing a revival, with new restaurants and shops opening every year. Distinctive Housing in Uptown ChicagoMany of the spacious mansions and apartment buildings from the 1900s were converted into rooming houses to provide more affordable housing. However, over the last 20 years, these architectural gems have been renovated and restored by individuals and developers intent on salvaging the heritage of this lakefront neighborhood. While it is growing in popularity, there are still many opportunities to find affordable renovated and renovation-ready properties in Uptown. Background and History of UptownThe historical, cultural, and commercial center of Uptown is Broadway, with Uptown Square at the center. In 1900 the Northwestern Elevated Railroad constructed its terminal near Montrose and Broadway (now part of the CTA Red Line). This may be where the neighborhood gets its name since it was the terminal of the rail line that led north from the center of the city. The neighborhood's name may also come from its historical roots as a summer resort town for downtown dwellers. For a time, all northbound trains from downtown ended in Uptown. From here Uptown became known as an entertainment destination. The Aragon Ballroom, Riviera Theater, Uptown Theatre, and Green Mill Jazz Club are all located within a half block of Lawrence and Broadway. Uptown is also home to one of Chicago's most celebrated final resting spots, Graceland Cemetery.
