Background and History of Streeterville

Streeterville has an interesting history as it was once Lake Michigan. It was named for one of Chicago's eccentric residents, George Wellington "Cap" Streeter. In 1886, Streeter ran his schooner aground on a sandbar in Lake Michigan, near Michigan Avenue. Unable to dislodge the vessel, he stayed there and turned it into a home. Slowly, landfill turned the lake into land and Streeter (unsuccessfully) laid claim to the land.
