Current Trends and Facts of Lincoln Park Chicago Lincoln Park is known for its gorgeous park that runs along Lake Michigan. Lincoln Park is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Chicago. It has the most restaurants per capita in the city, where there are many traditional restaurants, with newer trendier restaurants adding to the mix. Lincoln Park offers just about anything from the Lincoln Park Zoo, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, beaches, golf, tennis courts, theaters, and comedy clubs along with hundred of restaurants and bars to choose from. Shopping includes a mixture of independent and one-of-a kind businesses. It is also home to the acclaimed Old Town School of Folk Music, a popular entertainment venue and music school. Lincoln Park is filled with Chicago history, which can be fully explored at the Chicago Historical Society on Clark Street at North Avenue The neighborhood population is primarily made up of young professionals, recent college graduates, and young families. It does continue to be home to Lincoln Park High School, Francis W. Parker School, and DePaul University, where most of the students live in Lincoln Park. Distinctive Housing in Lincoln Park Chicago The south end of Lincoln Park, toward downtown, is known as Old Town. It contains quiet tree-lined residential streets with some of Chicago's finest and most expensive homes: impressive greystones, brick townhomes; and charming row houses and tucked-away coach homes. Further north are the Wrightwood and Sheffield neighborhoods with a mix of mansions, two-flats, apartments, condos and frame homes. West of Sheffield Avenue is the DePaul neighborhood, with stately single-family and multiple-unit housing, and original Chicago row houses with richly ornamented Victorian facades. There are also handsomely restored greystones and newer homes designed by the world's top architects. Over the years, urban dwellers have taken churches, old schools, warehouses, stores and factory buildings and converted them into desirable condos, stores and restaurants. So, the boundaries of Lincoln Park have recently pushed farther west to create the Ranch Triangle neighborhood, an area that hugs Clybourn Avenue. Background and History of Lincoln Park The area now known as Lincoln Park in Chicago was still primarily forest with stretches of grassland and occasional quicksand, and was virtually untouched by Europeans as late as the 1820s. In 1824 the United States Army built a small post near today's Clybourn and Armitage Avenues. Indian settlements existed along Green Bay Trail, now called Clark Street (named after explorer George Rogers Clark), at the current intersection of Halsted Street and Fullerton Avenue. In 1836, land from North to Fullerton and from the lake to Halsted was inexpensive because the area was considered remote. Therefore, a small pox hospital and the city cemetery were located in Lincoln Park until the 1860s. In 1837 Chicago was incorporated as a city, and North Avenue was established as its northern boundary. Settlements increased along Green Bay Trail when the government offered land claims and Green Bay Road was widened.
